Bennett or Wiesen: which mechanical test?

“You’ll be taking a mechanical aptitude test” is not the name of a product. Two tests dominate the category, published by different companies at different lengths, and prep sites report their question counts interchangeably — which is why the numbers you find online contradict each other. Here is what each publisher actually prints, and what both are testing underneath.

The two shapes

Both figures below are from the publishers’ own product pages. They are the only question counts in this category that come from a publisher rather than from a prep site quoting another prep site.

Neither publisher breaks its test into a count per topic, so nobody can honestly tell you how many gear questions to expect. Neither publishes a passing score either — employers set their own and do not disclose them.

What both are really testing

Underneath the two products is one idea repeated in different clothes: a machine multiplies force and charges for it in distance. A lever, a ramp, a screw, a block and tackle and a gearbox are all that same bargain, and once you can see which side of it a picture is showing, a large share of either test answers itself.

The rest is everyday physics about what tips, what slides and what keeps going — and, on the Bennett explicitly, three areas candidates rarely revise: pressure and flow in pipes and tanks, how heat moves, and what happens to a circuit when one part of it opens.

  • Meshed gears turn opposite ways; an odd number of them leaves the last turning with the first
  • An uncrossed belt keeps both pulleys turning the same way — the opposite of gears
  • Speed goes down as size goes up, and turning force goes up as speed goes down
  • A block and tackle multiplies your pull by the number of rope parts on the load, and you pull that many times as much rope
  • A lever’s class is decided by what sits in the middle: fulcrum, resistance or effort
  • Pressure at the bottom of a tank depends on its depth, not its width
  • One open switch stops a whole series circuit and only its own branch in a parallel one

The one thing a written page cannot practise

On both tests, a typical item is a drawing: two gears with an arrow, a lever with a marked fulcrum, water standing in connected vessels. The reasoning is exactly what written questions ask for, but reading the diagram is a separate skill and it is the one people are slowest at.

The best free source of the drawn kind is an unexpected one — the California firefighter written test’s official study guide, which teaches gears, pulleys, block and tackle, levers and head pressure with diagrams and worked answers, and is published free by the body that runs the test. It is linked from this site’s firefighter pages and is worth an hour whatever job you are applying for.

Where else this test hides

Mechanical reasoning is often a section inside a larger hiring test rather than a test on its own. It is 25 of the 100 questions on the FCTC firefighter written exam. FPSI lists mechanical reasoning among what its firefighter prep covers. Apprenticeship batteries test the same habits of mind through algebra and reading instead.

Which is worth knowing for a practical reason: if you are preparing for one of those, the mechanical practice on this site is the same material, and if you are preparing for a Bennett or a Wiesen, the firefighter mechanical set here is more of it in a different setting.

Which mechanical aptitude test will I be given?
Ask the employer — it is a fair question and the answer changes the pace you should rehearse at. The Bennett runs at 27.3 seconds an item and the Wiesen at 30, and the two are the overwhelming majority of what gets sent.
Is the Bennett harder than the Wiesen?
Neither publisher publishes anything that would let you compare difficulty, and the two are normed separately, so a percentile on one is not a percentile on the other. The Bennett is item-banked and weights items by difficulty; the Wiesen is a straight count out of 60 written at a sixth-grade reading level.
How do I study for a mechanical aptitude test?
Learn the handful of rules that decide most items — gear direction, speed and size, rope parts, lever classes, pressure and depth — then do timed sets until the reasoning is automatic rather than reconstructed. The tests are paced tightly enough that fluency matters more than knowledge.
Can I use a calculator?
Neither publisher publishes a rule, which means nobody honestly knows but your employer. The arithmetic is small by design, so practising without one removes the question.
What is a good score on the Bennett or the Wiesen?
There is no published answer. Both are reported to the employer with a percentile, and the employer sets its own bar for its own roles. Anyone printing a target score by job title has invented it.
